Bristol ‘bridges the gap’ to launch 2015 as Europe’s Green Capital.

Bristol launched 2015 as Europe’s Green Capital on Saturday with a high wire spectacular, entitled ‘Bridging the Gap’.

With a nod to James Cameron’s The Abyss, and the London Olympics, two of the city’s iconic eight storey warehouses were transformed into the animated backdrop for the show, by Cirque Bijou. Colour changing umbrellas evoked giant jelly fish in thrall to the live music before tight wire artist Jade Kindar-Martin and crossed between the two bonded warehouses by bike with Hollywood stuntwoman Karine Mauffrey suspended on a trapeze 100 feet above the ground.

The show was intended the highlight the difference between green intentions and green actions but the significance of the high wire will resonate with many particularly in an election year with national environmental commitments under threat.

2015 will see Bristol host high profile events, installations, and conferences, but most of the ground breaking and heavy lifting – the ideas and activities – will take place in neighbourhoods and local communities.

Bristol was awarded Green Capital status on its third attempt, partly on the strength of what it’s done to date, but more on what it plans to do in the future. The real test of this ‘award’ will be whether it accelerates progress towards Bristol’s vision of being a low carbon city with a high quality of life for all and whether it can do this in a way which is genuinely inclusive.

By the end of 2014,  previous title holder Copenhagen had created a partnership of 90 organisations. The Bristol Green Capital Partnership already has 700+ members comprising businesses, community groups, NGO’s and others and 16 theme groups covering topics such as energy, resources, food, engagement, nature, and evaluation so it begins the year with real momentum.

We have been supporting Bristol 2015 by working with the theme groups to provide facilitation support and planning advice for 2015 and beyond.
