We develop and run our own in-house and open training courses, and we run bespoke training courses on behalf of clients.
We also prepare and facilitate workshops, seminars and consultation events.
Our own training courses
Planning for zero carbon development
One and two day courses on developing, preparing and implementing planning policy on low and zero carbon development in the light target for achieving zero carbon in new housing by 2016.
The course is aimed at Planning Policy, Development Control officers, but may also be relevant to sustainability, energy efficiency and housing officers.
The course has been designed to help Local Authorities to:
- Interpret and set planning policy relating to zero carbon development, climate change, and renewable energy.
- Apply policy as set out in Planning Policy Statements & Guidance.
- Make best use of tools such as the Code for Sustainable Homes and ‘Merton’ style renewable energy targets.
- Develop confidence in working and negotiating with developers.
- Know what to look out for when assessing planning applications.
Towards Zero Carbon Development
A two day course on planning, designing and constructing very low and zero carbon homes.
The course is aimed at architects, developers, and builders. It will also appeal to Development Control officers who require more technical coverage than the course above.
Day one covers passive heating and cooling and use of tools such as the Code for Sustainable Homes in the design process.
Day two covers the use of low and zero carbon power and what is need to achieve ‘true zero carbon’..
.
.
At the end of this course participants will leave with an understanding of:
- The definitions of ‘zero carbon’, ‘net zero carbon’, ‘carbon neutral’ etc
- The scientific and the policy context driving the move to zero carbon
- The design principles for achieving very low and zero emission buildings
- The role of the Code for Sustainable Homes in assessing and specifying low and zero emission homes
- The practicalities of reducing emissions from space heating, water heating, and the use of lights and appliances in new homes
- How to design buildings resilient to the projected changes in our climate e.g. higher summer temperatures.
- When and how to deploy renewables
- Other implications of low carbon living e.g. water conservation and transport
- The cost implications of building low and zero emission homes
